Yellow Pet Urine Stains on Carpet: 4 Real Colorado Jobs

October 27, 2026

Short answer: Yellow pet urine stains in carpet usually come out when they're treated with the right chemistry and given time to release, then extracted with hot water. Old stains that have oxidized into nylon can leave a faint color behind, and I'll tell you that before I start. I'm Mark, owner of Colorado Choice Carpet Cleaning, and I've cleaned carpet across the Denver Metro for over 23 years. Pet treatment is $45 per room, with my 30-day pet stain and odor guarantee on every spot it treats.

Here's why urine turns carpet yellow, what I do about it, and four real jobs from Aurora, Centennial and Highlands Ranch, including one where a faint color stayed.

Why pet urine turns carpet yellow

  • Urine becomes uric acid crystals. Urine soaks into the fiber, and bacteria convert the urea into uric acid crystals.
  • After about two weeks, the crystals oxidize. They bond to the nylon. At that point it isn't a stain anymore, it's a dye, part of the fiber.
  • Diet can make it worse. I see high-yellow stains most often when a dog's food isn't fully digesting.
  • Advanced oxidation can be permanent. On nylon, oxidized urine pigment can bond to the fiber's acid dye sites. On the worst zones, that bond is often permanent. That's fiber chemistry, not a cleaning failure.
  • Store-bought peroxide can make it look worse. I've seen DIY peroxide sprays leave carpet patchy and uneven.

How I treat yellow urine stains

  1. Inspect first. UV and a look at the fiber tell me how much urine there is and what the carpet is made of.
  2. Break the bond. On old oxidized stains I start with an alkaline pre-spray to weaken the bond, then an enzyme.
  3. Give it time. I check the stains at 15 and 30 minutes. On the Aurora job, they released at 45.
  4. Extract with hot water. Truck-mounted extraction at 200–230°F.
  5. Re-inspect before I leave for any remaining odor or yellow, and show you anything that won't come out.

Carpet is dry in 2–4 hours.

4 real yellow-stain jobs

Aurora: 20 yellow German Shepherd stains on white nylon, $159

Over 18 months, a German Shepherd turned white nylon carpet into yellow patches, 20 old stains in all. The customer called at 2 PM and we were there around 5 PM the same day. Alkaline pre-spray first, checked at 15 minutes. Then Saiger's P-Lime-Zyme enzyme, checked at 30. A final enzyme dwell, then extraction at 200–230°F. At 45 minutes, all 20 released like butter. We also took care of fresh vomit in 15 minutes. $159. Read the Aurora job.

Centennial: dozens of bright yellow stains on a rental turnover, $299 same day

A property manager called after the outgoing tenant said she'd already cleaned. She hadn't: matted gray traffic lanes, dog urine odor throughout, and dozens of bright yellow pet stains. We saturated the carpet with ODORx Un-Duz-It Unleashed, which combines oxidizers, enzymes and odor encapsulants, let it dwell about 45 minutes while we pre-sprayed the traffic lanes, then extracted with the truckmount and re-inspected for odor and yellow before leaving. The property manager's words: "You saved me, man." $299 same day with the high-yellow pet treatment. Read the Centennial job.

Highlands Ranch, University Blvd: 15-year-old dog, faint red cast stayed, $249

A homeowner moving out had nylon cut Berber in three rooms plus the stairs, and a 15-year-old dog that could barely get outside. We did a UV inspection, confirmed the fiber was nylon, used a heavy enzyme pre-treatment with extended dwell, hand-agitated it in, extracted at 200–230°F with our Prochem Apex GTX truckmount, and made a second pass on the stairs and heavy zones. The carpet improved a lot and she was happy, but a faint red cast stayed in the worst zones. I documented those for her. On advanced oxidation in nylon, that bond is often permanent. $249. Read the Highlands Ranch job.

Highlands Ranch: a DIY peroxide cleaner made it worse, $149 next day

Sally spent four hours with a store-bought peroxide cleaner on her pet stains. It looked worse afterward: patchy and uneven. Her carpet was a cut-and-loop nylon/polyester blend. We were out the next day: inspection, enzyme pre-treatment, truck-mounted hot water extraction at 200–230°F, and a final check. The carpet came up looking new, odor gone. $149. Read Sally's job.

Yellow pet stain FAQ

Why are my pet urine stains yellow?

Urine turns into uric acid crystals, and after about two weeks those crystals oxidize and bond to the fiber. On nylon it acts like a dye. High-yellow stains are most common when a dog's food isn't fully digesting.

Can old yellow urine stains be removed from carpet?

Often, yes. On the Aurora job, 20 old stains released after a 45-minute treatment. On very old stains in nylon, a faint color can stay in the worst spots, and I'll show you those before I leave.

Should I use peroxide on yellow pet stains?

I'd hold off. Sally's store-bought peroxide cleaner left her carpet patchy and uneven, and it took a professional enzyme treatment and hot water extraction to fix it.
